I’m getting super excited for the upcoming Buoys’ I’m getting super excited for the upcoming Buoys’ album in a couple of weeks so here’s a throwback to their last Melbourne show (I think) and this gorgeous rendition of Arm Wrestle
I love this beautiful release from @ashajefferies I love this beautiful release from @ashajefferies

It has some of the most beautiful lyrical moments and is one of those albums that only truly reveals itself when you’re really listening.

Second track, Lilo and Switch is an absolute must listen!
Next week’s Melbourne live music guide is here! Y Next week’s Melbourne live music guide is here!
You’ll notice it’s a very slightly rebranded guide as I try to squish a few extra gigs on the list. This week’s list has over 170 shows across roughly 50 venues. We’re so lucky to have such a fantastic live music scene here in Naarm/Melbourne.
I always love the chance for the odd catch up with I always love the chance for the odd catch up with a band from ‘back home’ so it was such a pleasure to get to ask @bigspecial_ a few questions about their latest album O’Joy, songwriting as a duo and how it feels travelling the world performing their distinctly British music.

This one was a big chat, so head to the website to read the full version.

I was feeling all kinds of emo this week when I started building this list so I make no apologies for the melancholy vibes.

Swipe to see what you should be listening to.

Bleakly melancholy, Colorado by Jesse Jo Starn perfectly sets the scene for this week’s list (It’s largely one of yearning). This gentle track sees Stark combining lyrical clarity with heavy emotions giving us a glimpse into her latest body of work.

Speaking on her upcoming release MUSE she shares:

“Writing is like bleeding. It’s gonna be a bitch to sing these songs”

And you can feel that in Colorado, it’s in the ache of the lyrics and the way some lines are delivered so slowly, as if it’s an effort to share the words.

Telenova’s Happy does contain beats of optimism alongside its yearning qualities. It’s sort of a darker take on 00’s pop. There’s these brighter elements in the music but ultimately it’s quite a depressing track at times.

“Despite the tough exteriors, the ‘having it together’, the nonchalant facades that a lot of us out there wear, we’re all masking hurts, disappointments, insecurities at times.” explains frontwoman Angeline Armstrong “‘Happy’ is a bit of a ‘heart cry’, we wanted to give voice to what a lot of people in this world are feeling in a very real and simple way

Hannah’s first single in three years Arm’s Length is told through the eyes of an anxious person as it explores attachment and the interplay of anxious and avoidant attachement styles. There’s a wistfulness in the song that isn’t quite hopefulness, but it soon gives way to a sad acceptance about how this relationship will progress.

Of the song, Hannah says – “I wrote Arm’s Length while watching attachment theory play out in real time with a new person. I found myself noticing all of their avoidant tells and feeling like I (finally) knew better. There is something almost funny about watching the dynamic unfold from this place of understanding it – I think this song was my way of telling myself “you know how this goes”.”

Alt-pop One More Hit is definitely one of the more upbeat tracks on this week’s list. The fast paced drums lift its energy as it tells

We won’t judge.

You can check out the playlist on Tidal, Spotify or You Tube.

I Hope You Like Crazy Girls is the latest release from Gypsy Lee (and possibly the last before upcoming EP On A Mission From God and Gucci). It embraces being proudly unapologetic, as it tells the story of two friends embracing chaos and refusing to shrink themselves to fit anyone else’s expectations. It’s both heart-on-your-sleeve emotional at times and powerful self-confident at others, reflecting the depth Gypsy Lee packs into her pop music. Speaking on the track she shares:

“Women are often made to feel ashamed of being emotional or feeling things too deeply, I wanted to reclaim that label and celebrate the fun, freedom and joy in embracing every side of yourself.”

Sometimes it’s just one lyric of a song that really draws me in and before I know it I can’t look away. That’s exactly what made Avery Cochrane’s Toy Gun stand out this week in a week of very strong pop releases. “I booked a ticket to your guilt trip once every month” sung atop this glossy, campy pop track was the line that had me hooked. It perfectly nails the theme of this track, the feigned bravery of having to put on a strong face for a romantic partner who is insecure whilst secretly also struggling with the relationship. The synth layers that give this song a little bubbly texture also further emphasise that contrast and it’s a great tune from this rapidly rising singer.

Punk-with-a-purpose rockers AmyJo Doh and The Spangles release their higher energy track It’s A Girl! this week. The song begins by centring on a gender reveal party but spins into all of the times women have been written out of history. Driven by strong guitars and its rapid pace the track is passionate and angry without tipping into aggression, making its point around femininity perfectly.

“It’s not about gender,” says Doherty. “It’s about reconnecting with the feminine energy in all
