Wilsn – The Way

Female in a leopard print hat, shot against a dark streetscape. Album cover for Wilsn Bloom

Wilsn’s track The Way, from her recently released album Bloom makes me feel nostalgic in a way I can’t quite pinpoint. Is it 70’s soul sensations like Diana Ross or Patti LaBelle, 80’s power ballad singers like Bonnie Tyler or 90’s R’n’B divas like Mary J Blige or Erikah Badu? I love the way this pop track takes elements of all three to combine it into something distinctly beautiful.

Vona Vella – Carnival

Using the metaphor of a funfair for life spinning out of control, Vona Vella’s Carnival is their latest release from their upcoming album (also called Carnival). Summing up the single, vocalist Dan shares “You’re enjoying the ride, but you’re not sure what’s really going on!” and the song contrasts between Dan singing about feeling overwhlemed and fellow vocalist Izzy reassuring him he’ll get through it. It’s a taste of the darker, more complex themes the band have explored on their new album, moving away from the wistful indie-pop of their debut.

Laveda – Highway Meditation

Overexposed close up of womans face against black background. Album cover for Laveda Love Darla

This raw, cinematic track pulls together everything wonderful about NYC band Laveda. Highway Meditation contrasts between stripped back guitars and a focus on Ali’s melancholic vocals to an intense noisescape of drum beats, heavy guitars and an almost shouting vocal section. It’s as if the song can’t decide if it wants to leave the chaos behind or embrace it.

The Clause – Nothing’s As It Seems

Cityscape taken from the middle of the road. People and buildings can be seen. Album Cover for The Clause Victim of a Casual Thing

Nothing’s As It Seems by The Clause is a classic indie anthem that delivers exactly what fans of guitar-driven music crave. With its catchy lyrics, driving drum beat, and heavy guitar riffs, the track keeps things simple but irresistibly effective. It’s a no-frills, feel-good tune that captures the essence of what makes a great guitar band tick

Cigarettes After Sex – Anna Karenina

Black and white image of a hand pushing someones shoulder away surrounded by a wide black background with the words Cigarettes After Sex

I don’t think I’ve listened to Anna Karenina once without crying yet. This incredibly moving track is part of a double release from shoegaze heavyweights Cigarettes After Sex. It’s a wonderful example of spoken word, it’s painfully simplistic, but it just conveys so much emotion. The pacing of the vocal part is perfect, drawing you in alongside the gentle instrumental until you’re completely lost.
