Songs To Brush Your Teeth To (5th October)
Songs To Brush Your Teeth To is our regular new music update where we bring you five songs to listen to each week – our suggestion is to do that while brushing your teeth so you make new music a good daily habit, but honestly, you can listen whenever you like. We won’t judge.

Read on for this week’s recommendations.
Jesse Jo Stark – Colorado

Bleakly melancholy, Colorado by Jesse Jo Starn perfectly sets the scene for this week’s list (It’s largely one of yearning). This gentle track sees Stark combining lyrical clarity with heavy emotions giving us a glimpse into her latest body of work.
Speaking on her upcoming release MUSE she shares:
“Writing is like bleeding. It’s gonna be a bitch to sing these songs”
And you can feel that in Colorado, it’s in the ache of the lyrics and the way some lines are delivered so slowly, as if it’s an effort to share the words.

Telenova – Happy

Telenova’s Happy does contain beats of optimism alongside its yearning qualities. It’s sort of a darker take on 00’s pop. There’s these brighter elements in the music but ultimately it’s quite a depressing track at times.
“Despite the tough exteriors, the ‘having it together’, the nonchalant facades that a lot of us out there wear, we’re all masking hurts, disappointments, insecurities at times.” explains frontwoman Angeline Armstrong “‘Happy’ is a bit of a ‘heart cry’, we wanted to give voice to what a lot of people in this world are feeling in a very real and simple way”

Hannah Cameron – Arm’s Length

Hannah’s first single in three years Arm’s Length is told through the eyes of an anxious person as it explores attachment and the interplay of anxious and avoidant attachement styles. There’s a wistfulness in the song that isn’t quite hopefulness, but it soon gives way to a sad acceptance about how this relationship will progress.
Of the song, Hannah says – “I wrote Arm’s Length while watching attachment theory play out in real time with a new person. I found myself noticing all of their avoidant tells and feeling like I (finally) knew better. There is something almost funny about watching the dynamic unfold from this place of understanding it – I think this song was my way of telling myself “you know how this goes”.”

Rayhab – One More Hit

Alt-pop One More Hit is definitely one of the more upbeat tracks on this week’s list. The fast paced drums lift its energy as it tells the story of chasing “one more hit”, whether that’s chasing a craving for substances or the endless pressures of a music industry that’s always chasing the next big ‘hit’ song.
Rayhab’s haunting vocals really drive the message home, at points lyrics are breathy and whispered creating both an edge of desperation and the idea that no one really wants to say these things out loud.

Amanduh – Hot Head

Amanduh’s hot head keeps all of the messy feelings of the previous tracks but flips them on their head into a sassy, confident record that embraces this chaos. Telling the story of keeping romance at arm’s length it brings with it a carefree sense of fun. I like that it still acknowledges the muddled nature of relationships but from a different lens, a place of control.
