Songs To Brush Your Teeth To (21st April)
I love it when lists like this week’s happen. I trawl through so many new music recommendations sometimes and they just never fit, but this week’s just fell into place. I had a couple of tracks in my mind I wanted to feature and the rest I loved as soon as I listened, and they just ‘worked’ as a part of the mix.
Enjoy this week’s selection of new tracks to listen to.
Hannah Potter – Snow Day

It’s actually hard to believe this is Hannah Potter’s debut release. This beautifully restrained, yet emotionally raw track has such a quiet power and depth to it – it’s truly captivating.
Speaking on the track Hannah shares:“From about 10 to 24 I was completely numb physically and emotionally,” Potter explains. “I wanted to connect and feel things, but my system was basically frozen. Part of the song is about looking back and wishing I had had the ability to have shown up differently for people who had tried to love me in the past. But also, being happy now that I’m not the person I used to be. I suppose the song is about wishing you could have savoured something a lot more than you did.”

Djanaba, Jamaica Moana, Anieszka – Dig Us Out

Djanaba recently released her latest project Did We Stutter? and Dig Us Out is one of the shining stars of the release. It takes Djanaba’s signature electro pop sound and brings on board Māori/Samoan force Jamaica Moana and Australian/Mauritian R&B artist Anieszka to create a more transcendental sound. I really enjoyed how it’s three very different artists coming together to create the track, and they’ve softened the edges of each other’s style to ensure that all the elements truly work as one.
Dig Us Out “felt really personal to me. It comes from recognising how much of what we accept in relationships is shaped by what we grew up around” shares Djanaba. “Having Jamaica Moana and Anieszka on this track brought in such different energies — it made the whole piece feel more layered and real. When certain patterns feel familiar, it’s easy to mistake them for something normal, and this was a way of unpacking that.”

Aubory Bugg – i think i had something once

I really enjoyed i think i had something once from Nashville-based Aubory Bugg. Her powerful voice soars above the soft guitars on this folk/country song reflecting both the sadness of leaving something behind that you perhaps didn’t realise at the time, yet also tinged with the hope and happiness of those memories.
Speaking on the single, Bugg shares, “That song is really about realizing how much of your life is made up of things you didn’t think you’d lose — whether that’s people, places, or even versions of yourself. It’s a love letter to that feeling, and trying to hold onto it for just a little longer.”

My Chérie – Stuck Inside My Head

Another powerful track, My Chérie’s Stuck Inside My Head explores life with an over-active mind and trying to find moments to just be. The lyrics are delivered over soft drums and a rich piano before the track breaks into a rockier instrumental section, which almost feels like it’s a release of everything no longer being stuck inside her head. Even more impressive is the fact that My Chérie performs every instrument, and the track was also produced by her – a true do-it-yourself artist.

Body Type – And What Else?

I tossed around a couple of other punk tracks for the final number on this week’s list, but post-punk quartet Body Type‘s And What Else? was just the perfect fit. I loved the opening with the ‘call and response’ style delivery and the way these vocal layers are used throughout. It’s punky, but also, a little softer around the edges – the drums are quite restrained, the guitars are hazy rather than aggressive and a lot of the power in the song comes from the vocals.
“The big chorus is a cathartic cry out against feeling insecure in a relationship, those mental twists your brain makes when statements of adoration make you feel skeptical and unworthy, but simultaneously hungry for more of that sweet stuff” says Blackman.
