Songs To Brush Your Teeth To (17th May)

Songs To Brush Your Teeth To is our regular new music update where we bring you five songs to listen to each week – our suggestion is to do that while brushing your teeth so you make new music a good daily habit, but honestly, you can listen whenever you like. We won’t judge.

Mia June – Pet

Image of two people holding hands. Only the arms can be seen. There is a garden or a park in the background.

Mia June’s Pet wipes away the softness of much of her previous work, with gritty guitars and an edgier sound. It still retains her core indie/folk sound and the first minute or so has a stripped back intimacy before the distorted guitars kick up a notch, the drums are added and the track shifts into a jagged and at times haunting sound.

“Pet is about a relationship dynamic that consists of one person following the other around, like a pet,” explains June. “It’s a one sided conversation from the perspective of the other person in the relationship that feels as if they have to coddle and protect the ‘pet’ one.”

Appletinis – Lovesick

Heart shaped cake with the word lovesick written on it.

Lovesick by Appletinis captures that nausea of self-awareness in a relationship when you realise that you’ve lowered your standards. The verses have these big, lilting vocals before they break into these shorter staccato statements alongside a pounding drum beat – mimicking the emotion of when each of these feelings hits you. It’s the perfect song for a break up spiral, or just for anyone who loves a catchy chorus.

Annika Bennett, Olivia Barton, Lennon Stella – Runs In The Family

Single Cover for Runs in the Family

I think it’s pretty clear to everyone by this point how much I adore Annika Bennett’s music, and this is no exception. A collaboration with Olivia Barton and Lennon Stella, this stripped back indie folk cover of The Roches’ Runs In The Family has the most beautiful vocal harmonies. There’s something so emotive about this simple song that captures the sadness and the inevitability of unbreakable patterns across generations.

SAMSCOUT – Over The Hill

Over The Hill Single Cover

Another stripped back indie folk track this week with SAMSCOUT’s debut Over The Hill. Written on a songwriting roadtrip the track centres on love and dedication and the idea of still loving someone and being there for them ‘over the hill’. I have a pretty clear idea of what ‘over the hill’ would mean to me personally, but I think it could resonate with most couples who’ve been through big life changes. It’s a soft, sweet guitar-driven track with this subtle soul rhythm hidden in the instrumental layers which really adds a richness to it.

EDIE – Garden of Edie

Blurry image of women at a night club. Single cover for EDIE Garden of Edie

Now for something more upbeat to finish with EDIE’s latest dance/pop track Garden of Edie. A fun track about giving into temptation, just letting go and those moments of selfishness where you just forget about everyone and everything else. The glossy vocals and synth layers bring both a lightness and energy to this electronic club track that really drive home the restless feeling of its narrative.
