Unicorn – Sweet Ride
It’s a bit of a rockier list this week, and first up is WA’s Unicorn’s latest track Sweet Ride. This track combines the rawness of 90s grunge with a more upbeat pop sound to create this great little anthem about just keeping going and believing in yourself even when things get tough.
Speaking on the release Jenna Hardie shares, “I often write messages to myself when I write lyrics to songs — almost like journal entries. ‘Sweet Ride’ is about determination and perseverance. Working towards what you want. Having the belief in yourself that you can do it — and refusing to take on board the noise and negativity of others.”

Tommy Lefroy – Thief
US/Canadian indie rock duo Tommy Lefroy announced their debut album last week and alongside it shared single Thief. I loved the combination of the gentle, ethereal lyrics and the heavy guitars that underpin this sadly nostalgic track. It’s like someone took a folk song and gave it a rock twist.
“The title refers to things lost along the way, how they sometimes feel taken, by time, or by people who’ve left us. The chorus came to Wynter in a parking lot, while driving for Postmates in Nashville. The song always felt special to us, like a thesis of how we felt in our early twenties,” says the band.
Zipporah – White Flag
As a part of her latest release Naungu Urui: Extended Cut, Zipporah dropped new single White Flag. I love the complex emotions in this track as it traverses vulnerability, courage, strength and ultimately acceptance while exploring the realisation that love cannot survive everything. It doesn’t quite fit my rock theme, with a very classic R n B feel to it, but I really appreciated the simplicity of the track, its touch of jazz and soul elements and the way it allows the storytelling to shine.
Club Halifax – Blah Blah Blah
I actually had a totally different track lined up to go here, but then I accidentally clicked on this song from Club Halifax, released a couple of weeks ago, and couldn’t believe I’d missed it off Songs To Brush Your Teeth To at the time. The song pays homage to the unguarded ramblings people often have after a few drinks. It’s about letting your guard down, and it’s raw, playful and driven by this awesome rock/punk energy. It also has this brilliant story from vocalist Bree attached to it:
“When I first showed my mum the demo, she said: ‘I don’t think this is angsty, it feels more like you’re at a bar,’” says vocalist Bree. “Around the same time I had this experience at a bar where this gorg woman was bartending, my little sister was wingmanning me and I got her number. Then on the car ride home I got so sick I vomited into my own bag and destroyed the number. Tragedies strike at any time.”
“As the lyrics formed, we kept coming back to that feeling of drunk sincerity and how you end up having the most honest conversation of your night. As an autistic person, having a few drinks genuinely helps me communicate more freely. I’m not advocating for getting smashed every night, but I have some memories of nights like that with a real warmth and fondness, and this song is a little ode to that feeling.”

Calico City – Gotta Go
And finally another WA artist making the list this week are Boorloo/Perth six-piece Calico City and their latest single Gotta Go. I love the way the sound in this track switches up, starting with rock guitars, before giving way to a funky rhythm that underpins the heart of the track and it’s catchy chorus. The playful interplay of vocalists Brianne Reyes and Sienna Law further adds to this song’s unique make up and reflects the growing confidence of this up and coming band.
