Patrick Savage: Icons of Cinema

Patrick Savage (violin) and Konrad Olszewski (piano) come to Melbourne’s Recital Centre performing a collection of pieces ‘Unveiled: Icons of Cinema’.

Grand piano and music stand on light wood floor.

Situated in the intimate Primrose Potter Salon, the recital featured music from Patrick’s recently released CD ‘ The Golden Age of Hollywood: Concert Works for Violin and Piano’. The first half of the performance took a journey through some lesser known classical pieces by well known film composers including Bernard Herrmann and Franz Waxman. Beautifully arranged, the varied selection showed a side not seen of some of these Academy Award Winning composers whilst still highlighting their distinctive styles.

The second half looked at film pieces written by classic composers, and spotlighted familiar works such as Shostakovich Spring Waltz (Michurin) and Williams’ Devils Dance (Witches of Eastwick). I especially appreciated how the chosen pieces resonated with the ambiance of the room. The evening began with lesser-known works, creating an atmosphere of anticipation. As the night progressed and we reconvened after the interval, the audience feeling more familiar and relaxed perfectly complemented the more well-known pieces that followed.
