Real Farmer – Missing Link
So last week’s Songs To Brush Your Teeth To nearly didn’t happen, whereas this week I was overwhelmed with great songs to choose from. First on the bill had to be Missing Link from Dutch punk rockers Real Farmer, the debut single from their upcoming second album Two Wrongs Don’t Make A Right. We’re big fans of their emotive, high-energy songs and while this one sees the band going in a slightly different direction – with an increased armory of guitar effects and bassist Marrit’s vocals taking on more of a role, it’s still shaped around their battering-drums and signature punk sound. Special nod to the fact it was produced by Melbourne-based Mikey Young too.

Aleksiah – Faker

Another Suzie Scribbles fave artist, Aleksiah, also dropped her latest track Faker this past week. This one has a little more of a funk vibe than her previous work but still retains her iconic pop sound at its core. It also has this beautiful, dreamy bridge which adds another diverse texture to the track. There’s a lot of complicated, mixed-up feelings wrapped up in this track about love and relationships.

Angus Legg – May All Your Friends Be Artists

This poignant track by Angus Legg is a reimagining of a song his late father wrote. It is a moving letter from beyond the grave & a moment of connection between father and son through music for the first time. It’s a hauntingly beautiful number where, in the second verse, Angus’s father’s original vocals are intertwined with Angus’s – something Angus never had the chance to experience. The vocals are set atop Angus’s familiar stripped back, guitar driven musical style.

The Church – Sacred Echoes (Part Two)
People are always recommending bands to me, and The Church is a name that’s come up over and over again. (Further proof for my Threads followers that I do listen to all those artists you suggest!). Their latest release is a sombre, orchestral number with an almost weary vocal track. I loved its lazy piano intro and its constant change in dynamics, from sparse, delicate piano, vocals and light drums to noisy crescendo climaxes. They’re definitely an artist I’ll be listening to a lot more, but this latest release feels like a great place to start.

Kayla Grace – Celeste

Most of the other tracks here had a very clear journey to making it on to the list – consistent favourites or solid recommendations from people I trust, but Kayla Grace is the wildcard. I found her name just randomly scribbled on a page in my notebook. Celeste came out this week, but this note was from a while ago, so it feel like a perfectly timed coincidence. Anyway, this lovely little folk/pop track had me from the lyric “You could kill me with your hair down”. I also love a good queer awakening, and this fun track is all about that, so definitely here for it!

I also have to confess that I struggled to not make this entire post five tracks from Annika Bennett’s gorgeous new album. If you haven’t already listened you HAVE to check it out.
