Kook Joey – Miracle

I love the jazzy elements in this upbeat track from Kook Joey. The more you listen, the more you hear little extra instrumental layers and the song has such a fun, uplifting vibe. Kook Joey shares:

“The song ‘Miracle’ came from that feeling of meeting someone and everything just clicking, almost too good to be true. We wanted to capture that excitement without needing to know where it ends — just enjoying being in that feeling. It’s a bit of a daydream, with a little JJ Cale-inspired country blues running through it.”

PanKoi – exhale

Exhale is such a pleasant surprise. Opening with a jaunty piano waltz it gives way to these stunning haunting vocals. It’s lyrically vague, alluding to the influences of an external perspective without fully revealing what that is. PanKoi shares a little more about the track:

“I wrote this song after receiving a hate comment on TikTok. Being called talentless by a random troll online made me want to reflect on my experience as someone who’s had internet access from a young age, and the role this has played in my self-esteem.”

Magdalene – Mattress Actress

I love this attitude-y track from Magdalene, that navigates the compromises you need to make to choose between fame and a relationship. There’s a frantic energy running through the song which makes it infectious.

“Mattress Actress is about having to choose the spotlight or love. It’s a tongue-in-cheek dance song about trying to maintain the spotlight in a man’s life and in his bed even though we’re not together anymore,” says Magdalene. “The addiction to love and fame and having to choose which one fulfills you more.“

The Tryouts – Chewing Gum

I love a good indie tune, and this one by The Tryouts has the perfect balance of strong rock guitars and lighter jangle Vampire Weekend-esque vocals that just hit my ears perfect.

Speaking on the track Chelsea shares:

It feels a lot more anthemic than a lot of our older songs but is still imbued with signature self-deprecating humour and nihilism.”

Michael adds: “‘Chewing Gum’ started with a riff that evokes the bass line from Smokey Robinson’s ‘Tears of a Clown’ and is basically loose observations from a life spent scrambling onto the wagon, and then swan diving off again. Not meant to be an anti drinking PSA, just a neutral response to what I’ve generally experienced in my relationship with alcohol over the years.”

Chvrches – Roses

I love the fresh new direction Chvrches have taken on this Roses. It manages to feel both different from their previous work but also heavily aligned with the synth pop elements that drove their music when they first started out. Thematically it’s a damning social commentary of many of the issues in Britain currently.

Speaking on this new direction Mayberry shares

“This is the longest break we had ever taken between albums and when we got together to write new music, we wanted to really push ourselves and not be retreading ground we’d walked before,”

“I really think we achieved that. It feels like the most coherent vision we’ve had as a band. We’re excited to be back…”
