Miles Phillips – Eastern Rosellas
I can’t imagine anyone isn’t already listening to this one, but Eastern Rosellas is genuinely the song I’ve been brushing my teeth to for over a week now! It’s catchy and wholesome, and it’s restored my faith in the music industry (and in the world a little bit). It’s got everyone talking about music that isn’t AI for the first time in weeks and it’s exactly the kind of tune you want to wake up to in the morning (but if you’re going to use it to brush your teeth, play it twice as it’s only a snappy 1:40).

Future Shade – Skyline
Future Shade is the latest project by Jannah Beth and Andrew Meyer. This electro focused track draws on Jannah’s typical multi-genre influences bringing in a funky Latin-style percussion rhythm to underpin the song. The track focuses on the themes of losing people or being afraid to lose people, the skyline motif acting as a place to hold the people you fear losing or a place to reconnect with those already lost. It’s one of those songs that builds its power as the track continues, transitioning from gentle and scared to powerful. The lyric “forget the reasons that we shouldn’t try” acts as a timely placed reinforcement of the shift in mood.

Foglights – The Rain Felt Kind
Foglights’ The Rain Felt Kind is one of those songs you want to listen to on a grey cloudy day (while brushing your teeth of course). It’s the most gloriously melancholy track. Muted vocals and strummed guitars interweave to form the bulk of this track and it sits somewhere between indie rock and folk. I love its gentle ethereal and nostalgic qualities.

Asha Jeffries – Cool Guy
Cool Guy is an aching pop ballad about trying to be ok with being into someone who isn’t that serious about you. It’s a story of self-denial and coping mechanisms.
Asha shares, “This song wrote itself very quickly after my first trip to New York. Listening back, I realised I am more often than not, in denial when I’m longing for something or someone. I guess it’s a classic story of unrequited love – yearning feels heavier, more punishing and unproductive when it’s not reciprocated. And it sucks, I’d really like to pretend to be the cool guy if possible.”

effie isobel – Hidden Treasure
I love the conflict in Hidden Treasure. Musically, it’s an upbeat pop song layered with synths and wind chimes. Yet lyrically it struggles with the uncertainty of getting sucked into something you can’t control or feeling like the world is collapsing beneath your feet. It’s unsurprising that effie explains that they didn’t know what the song was about when they wrote it.
effie isobel shares, “This song was written before I knew what it was actually about, it came to be in the middle of a transformative period of my life, where things felt really strange and uncertain. To me, it encapsulates the period between manifesting transformation in your life and it coming to be; the liminal space where you’re not where you used to be, but you haven’t quite reached your next destination. “
