A recent addition
Recently opened St James Souvlaki has brought to life a long empty unit on Bentleigh’s Centre Road. The bright, eye catching fit out and casual vibes leaves me hoping this venue will stand the test of time.
It’s light and airy inside with an open front perfect for summer, and while it’s a popular take away spot St. James is also welcoming and comfortable enough to sit in and enjoy your food. It feels a good fit for the area, filling that gap between an overly casual / mainly take away venue, and a full blown restaurant.
With an extensive menu
While the main theme is (of course) souvlaki and other Greek plates, there’s also tacos, burgers and poke bowls so it really offers something for everyone. We decided to try a few dishes from their Share Plates menu.
We started with the haloumi. This was a generous serve and I liked how the haloumi was cut quite thinly. It was soaked in delicious honey for a nice hit of sweetness. If you’re wanting something that’s a little taste of Greece this is a great way to start.
We then moved on to the Bifteki and the chicken skewers. While the Bifteki were the highlight of the meal for me, juicy with loads of flavour and perfectly cooked beef, the skewers were also a tasty choice and I’d happily order either again. I loved the presentation of the dishes, and again both of these felt like good sized options. We also added a huge side of chips (plenty for 2 people) and left feeling very full.
Relaxed vibes
The service was welcoming and friendly and the atmosphere was very chilled out and laid-back, which makes it a perfect spot for a casual meal with friends or family.
Overall, St James Souvlaki in Bentleigh is a refreshing addition to the area. The combination of great food, friendly service, and a welcoming environment makes it a standout for both a quick takeaway or a relaxed sit-down meal. With its diverse menu and well-executed dishes, it’s likely to become a local favorite in no time. I’m already looking forward to my next visit to try more from their menu!
