We’re bringing back our new music focus this month, and first in the spotlight is Joseph Simon. We asked him a couple of Big Music questions to get to know him a little better ahead of his upcoming EP release.

What album changed your life and why?

There’s loads of albums that have had a massive impact on my songwriting and just my life in general. Some that come to mind are The Stone Roses debut album, Arctic Monkeys (Whatever people say I am, that’s what I’m not), any album by The Beatles, and Paul Weller (Stanley Road). But for me, it has to be Oasis – Definitely Maybe. After I listened to this album, I knew I wanted to do music, it was the moment I got influenced to write songs and I just love that album, it will last the test of time.

If you could relive one concert experience which would it be?

A gig I would love to relive would have to be Arctic Monkeys, I went with one of my mates when we were 17 and it was a special night. To relive that would be incredible, hopefully they will be touring again soon.

If you reunite one band who would you choose and why?

If you asked me this question a year ago I would say Oasis! But now they are back together and I have tickets I can’t say them. For me it would have to be The Stone Roses, even though I doubt it would happen, it would be amazing.

Would you like to recommend a song you’ve been listening to lately for our ‘Songs to brush your teeth to’ playlist?

A song I have listened to a lot lately would be The Circle by Ocean Colour Scene, a band i saw in April this year. They were incredible and they are another big influence of mine, especially in their guitar playing.

We also added Joseph’s debut single Down the Line to the playlist. It holds a special place in Joseph’s heart as it’s where it all began for him. The track’s powerful guitars gave it an immense energy which we loved.

You can check out the playlist here.
