Album Review: People Mover – Cane Trash

Brisbane jangle trio People Mover drop their new album Cane Trash this Friday.

A collection of songs shaped by the Queensland heat and distinct visions of childhood homes, Cane Trash captures the messiness of being in your twenties through glistening guitars and melodies that stick like a seatbelt in summer.

Cane Trash Album Art by People Mover

The juxtaposition between the upbeat jingly guitars and the more sedated delivery of the sad, sentimental lyrics is a welcome refresh from many more typical indie bands. It’s a sort of Blossoms meets The Last Dinner Party mash up. It’s got those nostalgia summer vibes mixed with Gen Z irreverence.

Cane Trash is fully loaded with catchy hooks and choruses and it’s definitely one you’ll have in your head all summer. Stand out tracks for me included opener James St. which is the perfect little ear worm and does a stunning job setting the scene for the rest of the album. I also enjoyed the lazy delivery of the lyrics on Fade Lines, a lovely, simple track towards the end of album. It’s pure easy listening and definitely one to pop on your playlist.

Cane Trash is a nostalgic and unpolished debut that struggles between holding on and letting go of distant memories. All in all, a promising debut from these QLD up and comers.

We’ve also added James St. to our music discovery playlist – Songs To Brush Your Teeth To.

About People Mover

Formed in 2021 and rising out of the Brisbane underground house show scene, People Mover have been gaining traction on their local community radio station 4ZZZ (landing in the Hot 100 at #27 and #41 in 2021 and 2022 respectively) and beyond. They have played around Australia and London, including supports for Babaganouj, Girl and Girl, Loose Articles (UK), Pinch Points, Peter Bibb, and Rhysics, among others.

The band is made up of siblings Lu and Dan, along with good mate Billy. For fans of The Beths, Scott and Charlene’s Wedding, The Courtneys, The Strokes, Eddy Current Suppression Ring, Good Morning, the Go-Betweens and Courtney Barnett, People Mover’s nonchalant Australian indie-punk will worm its way into your head.
