The details…

Wolf and Hound is a tiny little cafe that serves some great food. With only a couple of double seater tables along with one communal table and a few seats at the window, the inside of this strangely triangular space is definitely on the cosy side. Luckily, summer is just around the corner and the 3 huge tables out front are the perfect solution to enjoy this popular spot.

Attracting a pretty continuous crowd of brunchers, lunchers and those just looking to grab a takeaway coffee, Wolf and Hound has pretty much nailed the local trendy cafe atmosphere. Staff are laid back but friendly and attentive, and the whole experience was very chilled out. The menu is small but offers a good variety of dishes with a real focus on vegan, vegetarian and gluten free meals. We opted for the chilli scramble (red hot chilli peppers) off the specials menu along with the Dr Marty’s crumpet french toast.

Making a chilli scramble that stands out is not always an easy thing considering there’s one on almost every menu in Melbourne, but with this red hot chilli peppers special they’ve certainly found a pretty unique way of doing it. Mixing in a generous amount of fresh kale with the eggs gives them a great, crunchy texture, helped along by the fried shallots and salted zucchini ribbon. The gochujang mayo finishes the dish off perfectly, making this a great tasting option that is bursting with flavour.

The star of the show though had to be the french toast. With beautifully sweet berry compote sandwiched between two lovely soft crumpets, this was not only a great looking, but great tasting dish. The infused chèvre whip and pistachio crumb added some extra flavour, and the crown of thick shards of white chocolate were a great addition. Somehow they managed to not go overboard on the sweetness and really nailed the balance here. Definitely one of our favourite sweet dishes this year.
