Songs To Brush Your Teeth To (14th April)
An eclectic bunch of new tracks for you this week! I’ve been working to get more breadth in all areas of my life, trying to make space for a wider variety of activities and people, so it’s nice to see it reflected here too. Anyway, enjoy the new music recommendations.
Robert Baxter & sweatbaby – MUSIC 2 MY EARS

I’m obsessed with this new track by Robert Baxter & Sweatbaby. I love that MUSIC 2 MY EARS is such a high energy pop-dance song but one that also has a softness to it. The drums are high-octane but without that overly loud or aggressive feeling you sometimes get, and the melodic layers really round out this great dance record.
“This song is about desire”, they share. “I want people to hear this track in the club, in the gym, on the radio, and it gets them pumped for their day. When they check who it’s by, and they’re like damn this song is Australian? That’s such a cool feeling. I have a lot of friends who are DJs, dancers, in the ballroom community, models, etc., all the different aspects of my life. I feel like this song suits all of them; everyone needs a hype up song, and everyone wants to feel desired.”

Teenage Joans – Bandits

You might know by now that I have a habit of including support artists I’ve recently seen live on this list, and Teenage Joans really impressed me with their opening slot for Biffy Clyro last week. The Adelaide-based duo have so much energy on stage, and I love the pure rock sound of their music. Bandits is their latest release, it’s got this big anthemic chorus and it’s hard to believe that just two people can create and carry such a grand sound!

Taylah Rose – Dibs

In a week where everyone is talking about pop music, I revisited this debut track from Taylah Rose. It’s such a fun, glossy pop debut and this week just felt the perfect time to include it. A self-confessed Sabrina Carpenter fan, you can hear the influence that’s had on Taylah’s work, along with some nostalgic early 00’s pop vibes in there too.
Speaking on the track Taylah shares:
“I wrote the track to bottle up the emotional highs of girlhood: growing up, glowing up, and falling hard without apology. Released on Valentine’s Day, Dibs reclaims the holiday as a celebration of yearning and the universal thrill of wanting someone’s love.”

Anna Jeavons – Smart Casual

Smart Casual is the lead single off Adelaide based Anna Jeavons upcoming album Anomie. I really liked the message and storytelling in this track, as I mentioned in the opening to this post, I’m keen to find more breadth in my life at the moment. I think like many, between work and side hustle, there isn’t always a lot of time for anything else which can bring, at times, an unintentional loneliness as I’m forever busy. I also don’t often have a lot of time to just ‘be’ and this record is a great reminder that both of those feelings are very human.
Speaking on the track Anna shares:
“Smart Casual is a song about how we don’t grow all year round and, like plants, need light and time. Like a lot of songs on the album, it wrestles with existential angst; it’s an outpouring of loneliness, and yearning for meaning. In the lyrics I say: I don’t believe in anything; I am more alone than I have ever been’.
But it’s not all depressing. At the end you can hear me repeat the lyrics ‘it’ll be alright’, almost like a mantra. I think I wanted to believe I could tend to the parts of me that felt cold or buried – and eventually be ready to unfurl and grow again”

Tkay Maidza – Must Be

This is another one of those tracks that’s been bouncing around my playlists for a couple of weeks, and I feel like it just fits here this week. It’s totally unlike anything else on the list musically, but is similar in it’s intent. It mixes rap, R’n’B and pop, and has this staccato beat to it that hits right from the start. The lyrics are sassy and reflect Tkay’s steps into independence and her new found clarity and intent about who she is as an artist. It’s a bold, statement comeback from Tkay Maidza.
