Last night we managed to catch Lucky at their sold-out debut headliner show at Fitzroy’s The Old Bar.
You may remember Lucky is an artist I don’t quite know how I stumbled across (I found her name randomly scribbled in a notebook) but as soon as I heard her I knew I had to get tickets to see her live.

Her (and her band’s) indie/grunge style just hits that mix between shoe gaze and pure indie rock that I love, and their tracks draw just enough inspiration from what came before to feel comfortably familiar – so it’s sort of like hearing a new album from a well-known band or your favourite artist’s new side project.
Opening the night was Nick Keogh. We only managed to catch the second half of his set but his blend of indie folk set a great tone for the night and it was pleasing to see so many people turning up early to support him.

Following this was Private Mountain. A five piece from Melbourne/Naarm they’d clearly read my 5 things every support act should do at a gig post as they made sure we knew their name and where to get their merch. Lead singer, Will, has a powerful, captivating voice and he manages to switch up his singing style with ease. They need a little more work honing in on a clear musical direction as their set ranged from a blur-esque vibe to bordering on more of a punk rock sound, but there’s clearly a lot of talent there.

Finally, Lucky took to the stage and it was everything I hoped it would be. She was so full of energy and enthusiasm (as evidenced by my mostly blurry photos) and the set flew by in a flash.

The tracks transferred well to a live setting, even on The Old Bar’s fairly small stage, and the band supported her perfectly. It was only when I was revisiting the gig in my mind this morning that I realised how tight and polished the set actually sounded. Of course, there’s always the informality of playing in a smaller venue, but there’s some serious stage presence there, as further evidence by the clear support from the crowd too!
Lucky will be supporting Garbage on their sold-out Australian tour later this year so if you’ve got tickets make sure you head down early to check them out, you won’t regret it.
