Album Review: Real Farmer – RFII

Real Farmer have dropped their latest EP RFII this week.

In anticipation of the EP release, single Mislocated came out earlier this week. Similar to earlier record, Big Stepper, Mislocated continues to address the problematic political landscape of recent times. Speaking on Mislocated, Real Farmer share:  “More and more it seems that the individual effort to make progress is being politicised and made more complex than it actually is and in such a way that we as citizens view the world burning while our governments spread populist lies. And, in all our confusion, the masses appear to believe them, which makes us long for an escape.”

Mislocated feels a less emotional track that Big Stepper and is also softer musically, but you can hear a sadness seeping through it. It’s reminiscent of early Pulp to my ears, and gives me the impression of an observer who, while affected, can’t change what’s unfolding in front of them.

The remaining two tracks of RFII, Hard Times and Once More are equally big tracks. Hard Times is a high energy, punk style number, and I love the interplay between the vocals and the drums in this song. It’s almost like a call and response interaction. I like the anticipatory nature of it. Whereas Once More, with is discordant sound has a real simplicity to it. RF II manages to showcase the bands diversity while retaining a unified sound.

Real Farmer have a style of music that’s not often made these days. They take the anger and passion of the 70s/80s punk and post-punk bands and wrap it up in a more modern package. RFII is a short but powerful EP that captures their unique sound perfectly.
