With an abundance of fresh healthy dishes, The Food Store is a great place to pop in for a break from the hectic Glenferrie Road brunch scene and have a more relaxed experience. With extensive specials and great coffee, you'll be sure to leave happy!

The details…

Situated in the suburban part of Auburn Road, the Foodstore is a breath of fresh air in the usually bustling Hawthorn. While still busy, there was definitely more of a laid back atmosphere at the Foodstore Cafe. Staff managed the busy atmosphere comfortably – having my much needed coffee on the table in a matter of minutes and still churning out beautiful looking dishes despite the peak times.

There’s plenty of choice on the regular menu and they cover a broad array of brunch classics, however we were drawn straight to the specials menu which seems to be an opportunity for the chef to try out some of his more creative ideas and we definitely weren’t disappointed. Every single dish we ordered was full of freshness and flavour, and we hope some of these bright, colourful plates get to hang around for a while.

I tried the thyme mushroom toast with spiced cauliflower, roasted cherry tomato, goats cheese, hummus and kale. The mushrooms were beautiful, with a rich flavour that allowed them to stand out on what was a fairly busy dish. I was left feeling full and healthy after this wonderful veggie breakfast. The serving size was generous, yet not overwhelming, and the range of veggies gave the dish lots of textural variety.

The spiced chicken salad was another highlight with the most delicious flavour on the chicken and a very generous, varied and filling salad option. It wasn’t one of those “oh I must be healthy” kind of dishes, and is definitely something I would love to go back and enjoy again.

The omelette was again packed full of veggies and was an interesting twist on breakfast – it’s not something often seen on cafe menus! This was a light, simple choice and something I imagine would be very popular.  We finished up by sharing the newly added red velvet pancakes. There was a lot going on on this plate and it was perhaps the only dish of the day for me which looked a little overwhelming, but I couldn’t fault the pancakes themselves which were little light pillows of sweetness. With a bit of restraint on this one, it’s going to be an excellent (and I think very welcome) addition to their menu!
