Zheani – LOBOTOMY

Multi-genre artist Zheani released her latest album LONG LIVE THE OLD DEAD GODS a few weeks ago, and LOBOTOMY has to be one of our favourites from the record. Lyrically this is a fantastic song and the delivery is so on point, with the reverb on the vocals and the flawless adherence to the pattern set early on – Zheani makes this all look deceptively easy. I’d recommend diving into the whole album at some point but if you want a taste, LOBOTOMY is the perfect place to start.

Jens Kuross – No One’s Hiding from the Sun

Further proof I do listen to all those genuine Threads recommendations that you send through. Jens Kuross was exactly what I was looking for to drag me out of my music funk a couple of weeks ago. No One’s Hiding from the Sun is one of the most relaxing songs possibly ever. (Yeah, it’s one of those weeks, where we’re genre switching in a heartbeat). The gentle simplicity of this track along with the almost whispered lyrics and the turn taking interplay between the vocals and the instrumental parts which control the pacing all play their part in making this one something quite special.

Street Carp – Passagio

I love throwing a little support behind a promising up and coming band, and I was quite taken with debut single Passagio by Wangaratta alt/slacker band Street Carp. These guys actually slid into my DMs asking me to promote their upcoming show (which is on 21st December in Fitzroy – more info on our gig guide), and this a little further proof that if you interact with me in some kind of meaningful way (NOT a random unsolicited no context link), I will actually listen to your music! And if I like it, yes, I will talk about it to people. Anyway, this great instrumental release has a grungy, almost shoegaze (at times) energy. I’ll be honest, I don’t quite know why I like it, there’s just something about the sound which struck me. It’s not too rock, not too mellow, and it fills a perfect little niche and I really enjoyed it.

Rageflower – Angel Things (Accurate Version)

You might have already seen our review of Rageflower’s recent EP release Sign of Life. Angel Things (Accurate Version) has been on repeat since Friday. Honestly, it’d probably earn that right just from the lyrics like “having a cigarette panic attack”, but beyond that, Rageflower’s angelic vocals, the way those vocals are layered to create the ebb and flow within the track, and the fact that it’s exactly the kind of music I’m in love with at the moment all made it a worthy choice for this week’s list.

Getdown Services – James Bay’s Hat

This definitely isn’t a new track, but as we head to the end of the year I’m reflecting on some of my favourite discoveries of the past 12 months and Getdown Services and James Bay’s Hat in particular have to be one of them. They’re also playing Melbourne next year, so I’m excited for the chance to see them live (they’re 2026’s Reverend and The Makers in that regard – a band I never thought would come here and who I get to see in a tiny venue and then be smug about it).

Anyway, shoutout to GANS who got me onto this track which has been a regular get me out of bed in the morning tune when I switched it up from Chappell Roan, because I do switch it up – I swear. This satirical dance-punk track shows off Getdown Services’ chaotic energy in the very best way. It is also another lyrically great tune (and if I hadn’t smacked an instrumental track right in the middle of this list I’d probably suggest lyrics were the theme of the week).
