Kaiyah Mercedes dropped their first EP ‘What Comes Next’ this week. Never one to do things conventionally, their first EP comes after two full length albums, and sees them exploring a wider range of musical influences.

Another crazy week of live music! Every week I’m like “this is the week where I’m going to run out of space to fit it all in” but somehow I manage!

Thursday in particular has an incredible line up this week, plus I’m very jealous of everyone heading to Ashnikko!!

(And yeah, I’ve spotted two typos in this but it’s already a day late so I don’t have time to change them they’re just going to have to annoy me 🙈.)

Songs To Brush Your Teeth To is our regular new music update where we bring you five songs to listen to each week – our suggestion is to do that while brushing your teeth so you make new music a good daily habit, but honestly, you can listen whenever you like. We won’t judge.

You can check out the playlist on Tidal, Spotify or You Tube.

I Hope You Like Crazy Girls is the latest release from Gypsy Lee (and possibly the last before upcoming EP On A Mission From God and Gucci). It embraces being proudly unapologetic, as it tells the story of two friends embracing chaos and refusing to shrink themselves to fit anyone else’s expectations. It’s both heart-on-your-sleeve emotional at times and powerful self-confident at others, reflecting the depth Gypsy Lee packs into her pop music. Speaking on the track she shares:

“Women are often made to feel ashamed of being emotional or feeling things too deeply, I wanted to reclaim that label and celebrate the fun, freedom and joy in embracing every side of yourself.”

Sometimes it’s just one lyric of a song that really draws me in and before I know it I can’t look away. That’s exactly what made Avery Cochrane’s Toy Gun stand out this week in a week of very strong pop releases. “I booked a ticket to your guilt trip once every month” sung atop this glossy, campy pop track was the line that had me hooked. It perfectly nails the theme of this track, the feigned bravery of having to put on a strong face for a romantic partner who is insecure whilst secretly also struggling with the relationship. The synth layers that give this song a little bubbly texture also further emphasise that contrast and it’s a great tune from this rapidly rising singer.

Punk-with-a-purpose rockers AmyJo Doh and The Spangles release their higher energy track It’s A Girl! this week. The song begins by centring on a gender reveal party but spins into all of the times women have been written out of history. Driven by strong guitars and its rapid pace the track is passionate and angry without tipping into aggression, making its point around femininity perfectly.

“It’s not about gender,” says Doherty. “It’s about reconnecting with the feminine energy in all

I absolutely loved their debut EP Teethe so it was such a pleasure to get to ask Laura of Laura and the Hell Cutz a few questions about the band’s journey so far, supporting Getdown Services and the inspos behind the EP.

Next week’s gig guide is here with all of Melbourne’s best live music.

I often get asked “why isn’t our gig included in your guide?” And I might do a whole post on this at some point, but the easiest way to get your show included is head to the gig guide on our website and click the link at the top to add it to our list!

Also sorry for all the typos in this, I’ve corrected like 100 already but there’s definitely more - but at least you know it was created by a human 🤷🏼‍♀️

Songs To Brush Your Teeth To is our new music play

Songs To Brush Your Teeth To is our new music playlist. We recommend five new songs each week, mainly by Aussie artists and these get added to the rotating playlist, along with tracks from previous weeks.

You can find the playlist on Tidal, Spotify and now You Tube.

Swipe for this week’s picks.

Club Halifax are one of my favourite discoveries of this year. Bee Sting is a slightly more gentle release than their previous record Blah Blah Blah. At its heart are the gently paced drums, and the song builds with heavier guitars battling the powerful vocals as the track heads to its climax. It’s another track on this week’s list that is bringing pain and emotion to the forefront as it moves through a post breakup journey and the need to go through the hurt in order to heal.

“‘Bee Sting’ is about the aftermath of a breakup and feeling destined to absorb pain to maintain normalcy and keep the peace,” explains Bri. “Making the song felt like showing the cracks instead of hiding them and sitting in the anger and rawness instead of resolving it neatly. Ultimately, the process meant learning that the pain means it mattered, but it isn’t a reason to stay somewhere wrong.”

The latest single from Melbourne four-piece Excuse For An Exit sees them deliver this dark track on self-loathing. You can feel the raw energy of self-doubt and frustration seeping through hate me like i do, as it tells the story of projecting low self-esteem onto others and trying to recover from a sense of perceived rejection. I love how the song switches up between aggressive alt-rock elements to more sultry, yet sweet pop-rock sections as the track unwinds, highlighting the dichotomy of being in that headspace beautifully, the negative self doubt creeping in from one side, and the gentler self preservation from the other.

This powerful cinematic country track by The Smith and Western Jury was written in response to a horrific incident of femicide in Australia. Originally written over a year ago, Hell Must Be Empty remains as deeply relevant at the time of its release. The vocals centre around the repeated mantra “Hell must be empty, the devils are all here.” as the song tells the story of the ever
