Songs To Brush Your Teeth To (30th March)
So much for the good routine… once again it’s Sunday night and I haven’t finished writing up this week’s new music recommendations.
I went to see Dune Rats this week and they blasted through a 20 song set list in just under an hour, so the plan is to embrace that punk energy and smash through these song recommendations in similar fashion. (I chose the songs a few days ago, I just never actually wrote anything about them.)
Kirsten Mallyon – Sometimes

Sometimes is a soft, guitar driven song that gives you a reminder than everything must pass. I first listened to this track around a month ago, then it sort of got lost in the clutter of my never ending things to listen to. However, in gearing up for a huge March my monthly motto was “the only way out is through”. This week, realising I pretty much was through what was a difficult month in many ways, it brought me back to this gentle, uplifting track.

Racerage (featuring Jamaica Moana) – Do The Labour

So I have to say, I think this is the first time I’ve truly discovered an artist through an Instagram post or reel. I’ve definitely heard new songs this way, and probably have discovered artists from tiktok but Instagram… I don’t know, It’s generally evaded me. Anyway, Racerage’s Do The Labour featuring Jamaica Moana isn’t a new track but it’s new to me. I love its rhythm and pace – it’s hypnotic, and it’s such important messaging.* I’ve had it stuck in my head since the moment I first heard it.
*I hesitated about including this track because I recognise there’s definitely a lot more I could do to “Do The Labour” and I feel like a massive hypocrite sharing it saying “this messaging is so important” knowing I’m also someone that needs to hear it. But multiple things can be true – the messaging is important AND I need to do better AND I love this track. So it’s here, on my list.

Lucky – Biting Heels

We’ve been big fans of Lucky at Suzie Scribbles for a while. Biting Heels is the title track from her upcoming EP. It has her trademark slightly grungy indie sound, and the guitars switch from being quite jangly to a heavier sound when the drums fully kick in around the first chorus. I love that the sound is unique but it’s also so familiar, it’s got the building blocks of a very traditional indie rock song underpinning it.

I See Orange – Wine Boy

As you know I’m always trying to keep my finger on the pulse of bands from back home. I’m also trying to explore more female fronted rock bands, so this track by Swindon based I See Orange ticks those boxes perfectly. Wine boy is a powerful alt-rock track that sees lead singer Giselle Medina seek to personify her new found obsession with red wine. It balances that heavy rock energy with a clever knack for melody and it’s exactly the kind of song I’ve been searching for.

The Lazy Eyes – The One Who Got Away

The Lazy Eyes are a Sydney based indie/psychedelic rock group but The One Who Got Away has so many elements from some of my favourite bands from ‘back home’. It’s got a nostalgic, upbeat sound very similar to Blossoms – who I adore – while the vocal delivery has this lazy lilt to it that could be straight out of the lightning seeds playbook. There’s even a hint of The Kooks in there (in a good way). It got my attention straight away, and it’s definitely got me excited for The Lazy Eyes upcoming LP (released August 21).
