Songs To Brush Your Teeth To (22nd March)
So I’m finally starting to get into a good routine with this again after what feels like weeks of disruption. There was my usual last minute scramble to make some final cuts to the list, and as usual I’m writing this too late, but most of the decisions were actually made by my self-imposed Thursday deadline!
I’m also really happy with the mix this week, I feel I’m not too solidly in one genre or another and I always like that. On to this week’s new music recommendations.
Charley – Bite My Tongue

Charley’s Bite My Tongue, is a sneak peak into her upcoming album THE CHRONICLES OF A SERIAL IDEALIST which is out mid April (17th to be exact). It’s a great anthemic pop track with the most beautiful, clean production. The song explores the feelings of reconnecting with someone you loved and realising they’ve moved on.
“Songwriting is a form of therapy for me,” explains Charley “I like to take the tougher parts of life and turn them into something creative. ‘Bite My Tongue’ is about the realisation that sometimes you have to pretend to be ok with the person you want wanting someone else, more than they want you, and accept that certain things are better left unsaid.”

Jannah Beth – Vintage Red Clubman

Vintage Red Clubman is Jannah Beth’s first release in three years, and the debut single from her upcoming EP Orbits & Echoes, out 9 April. I really enjoyed that this one was something a little different. I struggled to put it in a ‘box’ genre wise. There are electronica elements in there for sure, and its got pop vibes as well, but there’s also kind of a Lola Young-esque R’n’B tinge to the track and something sort of nostalgic about it too. I love the ever changing layers on it. It could easily sound ‘too much’ but it’s done really well and Jannah knows when to build up the track and when to just let the vocals take centre stage.

smallways – KNOW WHERE?

This was the track that almost made it last week, but I took it out in place of something softer and more contrasting to the rest of the list. However, this week Sydney duo smallways are the perfect fit. This high-energy punk track challenges the illusion of progress in modern civilisation – something I can definitely resonate with. It’s a snappy two and a half minute song which opens with big guitars and then picks up a rapid pace which portrays the anger throughout the track. Lyrically, the song is laced with little sarcastic lines that may sound sweet on first hearing them, but actually hit on the way woman are expected to be perceived – perpetually happy and polite – despite how they are really feeling. I’m glad I held on to this one for a week, because I feel it sits right, just here.

Airling – Stars

Airling’s latest EP Retrieve would definitely be on the list of ‘EP’s I’d review if I had more time’ (an ever growing list). I was really taken with track Stars and if you enjoy it too definitely go and check out the rest of the record. The repetition of the mantra “Maybe this was just for fun” becomes almost hypnotic at times and it’s such a driving force of the rhythm of the song. I almost imagine it’s like she’s trying to convince herself of the fact it was just for fun, when really she knows it was something more, or perhaps hearing those words were a moment that really resonated with her. The heartfelt lyrics and storytelling on Stars are replicated throughout the rest of her EP too.

Circle The Sun – Gravel Road

I played this one for my partner and he was like “It sounds like that late 90’s/early 00’s era kind of experimental rock”, anyway, reading the bands bio they describe their inspirations as Jamiroquai, Black Sabbath, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Incubus so I guess they did a good job nailing that! I really like the reggae and funk element mixed into this rock song – it gives it a nice little groove. I struggle with a lot of modern rock music being very derisive of what came before and at times, honestly, a little boring and what struck me about Gravel Road was that it was different. Yes, it felt nostalgic in some ways, but it didn’t feel dated or repetitive. It’s a strong track from a band still fairly early in their career.
