Review: Hecho en Mexico, Fitzroy

Hecho en Mexico’s flagship Fitzroy store is a jaunty, vibrant eatery.

Taking full advantage of their corner unit, they offer an intimate indoor setting, or covered outdoor dining. As the space is fairly small, it’s mainly designed for tables of 4 or less. There are a couple of options for larger groups, but as it’s a popular venue I’d recommend booking if there’s a few of you.

The venue has a festive feel. The pleasantly patterned interior fits perfectly with Fitzroy’s eclectic Brunswick Street. The friendly staff maintain the perfect balance of being attentive, yet not overbearing, which is tricky to do in a small space.

Mocktails, Menus

The drinks list at Hecho en Mexico is extensive, but as it was early in the day, we opted for mocktails. My virgin mojito arrived beautifully presented, leaving me keen to go back to sample their cocktail list one evening.

On the food menu, there’s a great mix of light bites or larger dishes spanning a range of Mexican street-style meals. The dishes are affordable with most mains sitting around $20 and there’s a decent selection of vegetarian or vegan options too.

We started with the corn chips and street style corn. There’s a make your own guacamole option which looked interesting, but I was feeling too lazy so went for the pre-made variety. It was a generous serve with plenty of toppings. It’s an ideal start to a meal or a good snacking option alongside a couple of drinks. The generously portioned street corn was delicious, with a soft spicy kick adding a punch of flavour but not ruining your tastebuds for the main event.

Moving on to mains…

We tried the trio or tacos and the quesadillas. For the tacos we opted the fried chicken, vegetarian and beef (there’s a lot of options to choose from which is fab). I was a bit worried as the ingredients for each weren’t fully listed on the menu, but the main ingredients were just complemented some well thought out salad and sauce combinations, nothing overly creative. I loved that all three tasted completely different and were uniquely put together.

The beef had to be my favourite. It was so rich and tasty. Although, no regrets about not getting three of these, as it would have been too much. The fried chicken offered a lighter option and it was well cooked with a good crispy crunch! Finally, the vegetarian taco was more filling than expected. It also has a nice heat to it and was probably the spiciest dish of the day (it does say it has heat on the menu).

The quesadillas were also delicious and extremely filling. The beautifully soft tortillas were generously stuffed with shredded beef (one of the 10 protein options), and perfectly complemented by the chipotle aioli and pineapple corn salsa, along with a handful of crunchy nachos to finish off the dish.

Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our visit. From the food to the atmosphere to the great service, Hecho En Mexico should definitely be at the top of your list next time you find yourself in Fitzroy.
