Birmingham-based four piece indie outfit ORKAH released their latest track Head Down in early May.
The band, best known for track Maisie & Neville are renowned for their storytelling and atmospheric soundscapes. Head Down, a powerful exploration of emotional disconnection and the fight to reconnection, continues this legacy.
Head Down draws inspiration from witnessing someone close withdraw emotionally during a difficult period. The song’s hook, “Don’t you hold your head down”, became a mantra, a call to push through the darkness and reclaim a sense of self. It serves as an anthem for pulling oneself out of a slump while grappling with feelings of disconnection.

Gritty Yet Warm
Sonically, Head Down strikes a balance between groove-driven rhythms and intimate vocals. Produced by Fred Cox (Kasabian, Rag’n’Bone Man), the song is minimal yet impactful, with ambient vocal layers and a heartbeat-like pulse. The intention was to evoke the feeling of a late- night walk through a quiet city, headphones on, letting everything sink in.
Initially penned by guitarist Dan, the track was revisited and brought to life in the studio with the full band. A spontaneous vocal delay effect during recording became a moment of accidental magic that underscores the track’s reflective tone.
A Moment of Creative Rebirth
Head Down is the second release in ORKAH’s upcoming four-track EP, Riptide, a project that signifies a turning point for the band. Working with Fred Cox has allowed the band to refine their sound, further exploring emotional vulnerability and emphasising sonic atmosphere. The band also recently brought manager Nat onboard, a move that has added focus and momentum to their artistic direction.
