Hayley Williams drops 17 new singles.

It’s not an album, it’s a playlist. I don’t know why, and honestly, I don’t really care. Each single comes with its own little cover art image that reflects the theme and lyrics of the song which is super cute. Hayley’s pride at being able to do this fully independently is palpable and it quickly overshadows any questions you might have as to the more unusual release format.

As with her previous solo work, these new songs offer a softer sound to that of Paramore. They feel deeply personal to Hayley at times, and I admire the bravery of someone who has been under the scrutiny (and at times control) of the music industry since such a young age still feeling comfortable to be this vulnerable. It does make her music truly resonate.

Kill me is probably my favourite. I found it very relatable lyrically, but also it’s catchy! I like the notion that you can write about something so personal, so serious, but still make it a great song.
I also enjoyed Glum. I love the tonality and layered effects throughout. That little stripped back bridge – love it! It’s very pop oriented, so slots well into a lot of the music I’ve been listening to this year too! Mirtazaphine is another great track and is probably the most familiar sounding too if you’re longing for that rockier kind of feel.

I know all the tracks I’ve mentioned so far sound seriously depressing, but the collection doesn’t have that vibe at all. Yes it’s emotional, taking you on a journey through sadness, anger and self reflection, but it’s not self-pitying. You can feel Hayley’s sense of empowerment leaking through the songs, and it’s truly a pleasure to see her back making music!
We’ve added Glum to our playlist Songs To Brush Your Teeth To (a great way to discover some new music).
