Multidisciplinary artist MUNGMUNG unveils her latest project FĒI, released independently this week.
This four-track EP is ready to be dropped at house parties, on dancefloors and everything in-between. Its influences are clearly rooted in early 2000’s hip-hop and R&B, and the clever yet humorous lyrics are incredibly well delivered over infectious beats.
“I didn’t overthink a lot of the lyrics but still stayed cheeky and witty with it and the melodies that came to me were what felt right which reflects in the songs” shares MUNGMUNG. “I want everyone to lose it when the chords hit, when bars ride, when beats drop”.
Produced by Taka Perry (KATSEYE, Ruel), the EP opens with recent single IAM, and includes three brand new tracks POPDATTRUNK, WOMPX4 and EP title track FĒI.
On working with Perry, MUNGMUNG shares “All the tracks came out naturally during the writing process. Being in the same room as Taka is the best as there is synergy there. We bounce off each other so well and he never misses a beat (literally). He input so many unique elements into each track’s production, really giving them life.”
The EP brims with confidence and energy from start to finish. Opening track IAM is very reminiscent of Lil Nas X’s sound on the Montero album, which I love. It manages to perfectly balance the hip-hop elements and dance beats, making for an opening track that screams ‘I’m here’.
Second track POPDATTRUNK is probably my favourite on the EP. I grew up on Lil’ Kim, Foxy Brown and Da Brat and this track takes everything that was fabulous about their self-assuredness – the clean, yet melodic delivery of the vocals and those little hints of softness – and turns it into this bass heavy 2020’s interpretation of what that looks like today.
WOMPX4 is the dancefloor banger of the album. It’s definitely one you have playing while getting ready for a night out to get your energy flowing. Then rounding out the release is title track ‘FĒI’ (‘fly’ in Mandarin) – confident, gritty and ambitious, it takes the idea of ‘only up from here’ and climbs to new heights, pushing forward without doubting or looking back too much and celebrating the wins that have come from hard work.
FĒI is a bold and self-assured statement from MUNGMUNG, capturing an artist who is fully stepping into her sound and momentum. With its blend of nostalgic influences and modern polish, the sound on the EP feels familiar, yet authentically hers. FĒI leaves a lasting impression and makes it clear that MUNGMUNG has definitely arrived.
