Album Review: Alexandra Savior – Beneath The Lilypad

Alexandra Savior released long awaited album Beneath the Lilypad.

It’s been 5 years since Alexandra’s last studio album, and Beneath the Lilypad sees her join forces with producer Drew Erickson, best known for his work with Lana Del Rey and Father John Misty.

It’s an ethereal, haunting collection of tunes and a much softer album than her previous work, drawing heavily on an orchestral sound to create the album. Alexandra’s tender voice floats lusciously atop these beautiful tracks. She has this ability to just draw out each note slightly into the next and it gives the feeling that her vocals are pulling you through the track, drawing you in.

Given this album has been a work in progress over the past 5 years, it is remarkably cohesive. It’s one of those albums that requires repeated listening to truly appreciate Alexandra’s storytelling. The album talks of Savior’s artistic and personal journey over the past five years, channelling all of the ups and downs of her story as she navigates setbacks and freedoms on a journey to make music entirely for herself for the first time in her career.

It’s hard to draw out individual tracks on this one as it’s really one of those albums you have to appreciate as a whole. It’s the interplay between the songs that tells the story as much as each unique track does. However, single Unforgivable, has to remain a favourite of mine just because of its catchiness. Venus is also one I enjoyed. It’s very Billie Holiday sounding and I was drawn in by the simplicity.

This album was so worth the wait. It’s great to see Alexandra return with such a strong offering.  It’s clear she’s found her confidence with her musical style and hopefully we won’t have to wait as long for the next one!
