Tulliah – For Now

So, I’ve deliberately tried to switch the vibe up a bit this week and put some rockier tracks in the mix. However, Tulliah’s For Now isn’t that. It sits perfectly in that pop/folk bridge I’ve been loving lately and the mix of guitar, keys and beautiful strings on this track helps add to its emotive nature. It’s a continuation of some deeply personal writing for Tulliah, following up on her previous release Look Away.
Tulliah shares the themes behind the track – For Now was written about feeling a sense of hopelessness while reminding yourself that you are not alone, and that it’s a universal experience to feel thisway. The lyrics “for now I need help just like you” sums this all up perfectly.

These New South Whales – Big Machine

So as promised, here’s the rockier element of this week’s list. These New South Whales put out their latest album Godspeed last week, and Big Machine is one of our favourites on there. It’s led by strong guitars and powerful drums, giving a pulsing energy, but it’s the anthemic rhythm of the lyrics that really made it stand out for us.

Alewya – Night Drive
I definitely think I’ve hit the variety element for this week’s list, and I’m loving the way Alewya fuses R’n’B and electronica on her latest release Night Drive. This song marks a return for her after a three-year hiatus, and while it lulls you in softly, the dreamy track definitely develops an edge as it builds. Throughout the track, Alewya commands “Ride the car like a big big truck”, it lands as a statement of intent – gritty, self-assured, playful, and charged with her signature swagger.

The Buoys – Bitch

This one has stumbled back into my regular rotation as I’m excited for The Buoys up-coming tour. Taking a cheeky look at the way women are so often called a Bitch, especially for taking up space, I’m sure you can see why I love this track. Featuring The Buoys signature indie style with undertones of punk it’s definitely got that bit of attitude and is one of those songs most women will instantly relate to.

Wednesday – Townies

As usual, the fifth track eluded me until about 5 minutes before I was starting to write this post. I was flipping between a few, but Wednesday’s Townies definitely fits the bill this week. One of the grungier tracks on their Bleeds album, I love the way the lyrics flow from these pretty airy phrases to angrier half-spoken almost spat out sections. I love the attitude of “oh this could be a lovely pop-indie track, but we’re just not in the mood”.
