Elizabeth M. Drummond – Everything

I had the pleasure of watching Elizabeth M. Drummond supporting Merpire last week at her Howler show, and it persuaded me to take a little dip into her back catalogue and I found this beauty. I love how the heavy guitars on the opening contrasts against the light, high vocals. There’s this gorgeous little cascade with the layered vocals at points which is honestly – everything!

Kat Greta – Shoot Me Lover

The latest track by Melbourne/Naarm based Kat Greta, Shoot Me Lover is a funky little pop number with quite the rhythm! The simple chorus is allowed to shine, lifting high above the backing track and the result is lyrics that you’ll be chanting along to before you even realise it. Coupled with a drum beat that just makes you want to dance, it’s got exactly what you need in a pop song.

Paint – Forever and Always

Bubbles against a backdrop of sky reflected in water. EP cover for Paint - Forever and Always

I’m cheating a little here as Forever and Always is technically a 3-track mini EP from Freemantle shoegazers Paint. The tracks Forever – a nostalgia track about vocalist Anya’s early 20’s, And – a snappy 1 minute rock/indie bridge track and Always – a sincere glimpse into navigating adulthood as a creative, make up the record, but if I’m sticking strictly to the rules of one track, it’s Always you need to have a listen to. The back-and-to between Anya’s dreamy vocals and the heavy guitars really carry this track along, and you can hear the regret seeping through.

Dogpark – September

I stumbled across this new Dogpark track while I was fully in a “I haven’t heard any good new music in forever” mood. And that’s always an exaggeration, but it was where I was at, especially in this soft rock space. I love that the track is rock without needing to be dominated by loud guitars. They still manage to convey energy but without overcrowding the song. It’s almost the opposite to the first track on this list (Elizabeth M. Drummond’s – Everything), which I liked because it felt rocky where it shouldn’t, this is not-rocky where it should be.

Lucky – Lady Beetle

I was struggling with a fifth track this week (see aforementioned mood for the reason why) when I found a note in my phone that just said “Lucky??”. After establishing I probably wasn’t talking about the Britney Spears song, I retraced my steps to this lovely track, Lady Beetle. The vocals on this are gorgeous, the opening “Lady Beetle, ah ah ah” just hooked me in. I also like that I can’t quite put it in a box – it’s pop, it’s indie-rock, it’s shoegaze – and not quite any of them at all!
