Eastern Suburbs Food and Drink

Review: Fish and Burger Co, Doncaster

The Fish and Burger Co. has recently expanded, now occupying a double fronted unit, adding ample seating, floor to ceiling windows and a small outdoor area. The menu has expanded too, with some new burgers and salads further bulking out what was already an extensive menu, and a tasty gelato bar to perfectly finish off your meal.

The details…

Staff are clearly attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. We were warmly welcomed and offered a choice of tables – selecting one by the window to enjoy the Melbourne rain while we dine (nah, we just wanted the light for the pics). Inside, while there’s definitely a warehouse feel, it’s crisp, clean and well finished off. It’s trendy without feeling alienating to its suburban location. The sharp black and white contrast makes for a striking first impression and there’s a definite step up from your average fish and chippery. There’s a liquor license too, so you can easily come and enjoy a casual dinner with friends.

We were in a burger mood so we decided to go for the Squid Inc and the Mr Truffles burger, popping some cheese and bacon fries and a kale salad on the side. The Squid Inc is possible the most perfect dish to sum up this venue, with a little pop of colour from the Asian slaw and well loaded with crispy golden calamari. The calamari was soooo soft once you bite through that crispy coating and the pairing with the Asian flavours of the slaw and mint worked perfectly.

The Mr Truffle is a meaty mess of a burger with both chicken and beef on there! If you can get half way through this one without making a mess we’d be pretty proud, however it’s well worth the sacrifice to your top. All the meat is really soft and the truffle mayo is just plain yum. The beef patty is lean and as tightly packed as a Cranbourne train in the mornings. The huge chicken piece spills over the side of the bun and while you might have resorted to a knife and fork by the time you’re near the end, you’ll have one happy full stomach.

The loaded fries are you fairly classic cheese bacon spring onion combo. The fries are nice. A little soft but they hold up well under the toppings – which are generous. I always prefer chunks of bacon like these have over bacon crumb and the balance with the sauce was great. On the other end of the spectrum is the kale salad. It’s nice and simple and I love that they have healthier options like this on the menu. We all have those days where we want a little something on the side of our burger but don’t wanna carb load (or cheese load) and this is a great tasty alternative. The sesame dressing adds a sweetness to the salad and it definitely gives you those healthy feels.

Finally we finished off with some gelato. They’ve a good mix of traditional gelato and vegan sorbets. We both opted for a sorbet. The chocolate sorbet was a particular favourite – it’s hard to believe this one is vegan! They’re such a great way to end your meal.
