The details…

A tiny little unit, Up The Road is a simple but welcoming burger joint with a solid selection of items on their menu. With a few large 4 seater tables inside with comfy sofa style seating and a couple of smaller tables outside, this is a cosy space. The two toned wooden panelled walls contrast with the funky neon colours of the menus and the large windows mean it a nice bright, open space. Probably the kind of place to drop in for a quick bite rather than a good long sit down. It definitely has more of a takeout kind of vibe.

Though only having a modest selection of burgers on the menu, you can effectively build them to your own preference with the option of adding a multitude of extras at very reasonable prices. There are also a couple of salads, side dishes (including special beef sausage that we tried a small sample of and give a solid thumbs up) as well as a good selection of juices and milkshakes. Are you brave enough to try the carrot juice float?!

We opted for a couple of their burgers, though slightly modified. The carnivore and the caliente, with a large helping of loaded chips on the side. The Carnivore (with the addition of some good, crispy bacon) was a great meaty feast. The patties are thick and juicy, and ooze with flavour, helped along well by the house sauce. The cheese has a good, runny consistency and has a real, rich taste. A chunky slice of tomato and a restrained portion of caramelised onion add a good bit of variety to the flavours, while the whole leaf of lettuce was a good, fresh and crispy addition. Though a little bit messy (keep those napkins handy),this was a really enjoyable burger.

We cheated a little bit with the Caliente, as we took this already great sounding chicken and bacon burger and decided to make it a full house, adding a nice, chunky beef patty to it as well. Stacked with all this meat, as well as the fresh lettuce, cheese, red onions and jalapeños, it was a seriously good looking and colourful burger. The chicken was lovely and well cooked and had a real quality taste. The bacon had the same crispiness as on the carnivore, and the addition of the meat patty made it so filling we were almost unable to finish it off. The jalapeños kind of got a little lost amongst all the rest however, and so the burger wasn’t as hot as you’d expect it to be. A few more to strengthen their effect would have worked wonders. Again, this burger was a little bit messy and you’ll definitely be making use of your knife and fork.

No matter how much we load our burgers, we always think it’s a great idea to order a huge serving of loaded chips to go along with them, and this place was no exception. A gorgeous cheese sauce with jalapeños, and little beef cubes added great flavours without drowning the chips, making this a great tasting side. It’s just a shame we had already stuffed ourselves on their fab burgers that we could barely make a dent in them.
