Head Honcho – The Overview…
It’s pistols (or toasties) at dawn with Prahran’s new Head Honcho cafe.
Conveniently located a stone’s throw from Chapel street and just down the road from the new Prahran Square precinct, Head Honcho is a perky little cowboy themed toastie and coffee cafe.
The premise is simple, yet successful, and while Head Honcho enjoys a healthy coffee trade their toasties add a little bit of difference in an area which feels, at times, overcrowded with venues. Prahran has come through the other side of its struggles with the seemingly endless roadworks now complete and more parking available, and it’s great to see new joints like Head Honcho popping up as a result.
Cowboy themed cosy cafe
If you opt to have your toastie on site there’s outside seating, a few smaller tables inside, and also a window bar with a decent amount of seating space. It’s cosy, but it’s (almost) Chapel Street at its finest, with lively chatter that bubbles to shouts over the grind of the coffee machine; already this venue seems a hit with the locals. The cowboy theme is fun, allowing for some spiny cacti to pop up around the space and for some interestingly named toasties. It’s not rammed down your throat though, and Head Honcho is far from a themed cafe.
The toasties
We tried the Sergio and the Prospector, and if you want to know if they were generously loaded with filling just take a look at that cheese pull! The Prospector was a nice little twist on a classic cheese toastie with the addition of the truffle. The flavour of that did shine through with every bite and we were definitely a fan.
The Sergio was a little more substantial, with three cheeses, tomatoes and garlic. The mozzarella really stood out as a dominant flavour, while the oregano and tomato purée nicely balanced out the cheese to bring a more well rounded taste. Savouries were a winner during this visit, so next time we’re keen to try the chocolatey Cow print or the jam filled Texas Red.

Parking: Prahran Square offers affordable nearby parking at just $1 for up to 2 hours. Free street parking is available within a short (5-10 minute) walk, but can be busy and difficult to find at times.
Getting here on PT: It’s just around the corner from Prahran Train Station, alternatively, jump on a 78 tram up Chapel Street or a 6 up High Street (alight at the intersection of these two).
