The details…
Bright and light, Piccolina greets you with all the vibes of a simple, traditional ice-creamery. The striking green feature wall draws your eyes, whilst the rest of the store is open and airy, decorated largely with white tiles. The gelato and sorbet are hidden away in classic metal lidded tubs further adding to the clean, minimal style. It’s relaxing, and enjoyable and lacks much of the chaos and haphazard nature of many ice-creameries.
St Kilda is Piccolina’s third opening, having already developed their flagship store in Collingwood and a Hawthorn branch, but we think this (practically) beach side location is an ideal spot for this dedicated and ambitious ice cream company. Founder Sandra brings in a mix of traditional family recipes and skills learnt whilst travelling in Italy to hand make their perfectly imperfect range of gelato and sorbets. With less of a focus on the crazy, creative flavours, there’s instead a focus on using 100% natural ingredients, made from scratch and adhering to long-used techniques to cultivate delicious, well-known gelato flavours. (They do cakes to order too!)
We sampled some of their delicious gelato, and settled on some fresh and fruity sorbets for our cone and cup! Rather than silky smooth purees, the sorbets contain generous chunks of real fruit and you can really taste the natural ingredients coming through. Of all the flavours we tried the passionfruit was a firm favourite – we loved its summery flavour and delicious texture.
We also tried some of their granita (ice drinks), all of which were delicious and ideal for those hot summer days. The tangy lemon is possibly the most reminiscent of drink flavours from Italy for us, and there’s really nothing more refreshing on a summer’s day. The watermelon, mint and lime is clean, palate cleansing and almost has a cocktail vibe to it – it’s a little glass of summer time, or go for a simple orange granita if you’re not feeling too adventurous. Whatever you choose, this is the place to cool off in St Kilda this summer!

Parking: We tend to park a little away from Acland Street and walk over, as since being partly pedestrianised we just find it easier. We never struggle to find a street park and there is paid parking near Luna Park if you want to get even closer.
Getting here on PT: It’s right at the end of the 96 tram route – which stops practically outside the door (maybe a 2 minute walk at most). Alternatively you can get the 3/3a or 16 and alight at St Kilda Esplanade and it’s about a 4 minute walk.
