The details…

Soprano is a cosy little restaurant offering traditional Italian fayre. While it’s situated on the edge of a small shopping arcade, the dark wood interior is almost reminiscent of a wine cellar and the restaurant feels welcoming and secluded. It’s small in size, and while they can cater for the odd large group, it’s an ideal environment if you are dining alone or looking for a quick casual eatery.

We were greeted promptly and service was very pleasant with our food coming quickly, although the place was quiet as we dined early and I hope that Sopranos can maintain this when they become busier as this would be a key attraction to bring me back.

To start we ordered the antipasto platter. We shared this as a starter for 4 and there was a nice range of items on there, including a generous proportion of meat. A few small improvements could really help this dish. There were only a few crackers on the side and a little extra bread, or similar, would make this both more filling and more well balanced. Presenting it on a board instead of a plate would also make a huge difference, but overall we did like this dish and felt it offered good value.

I particularly liked how there was the option to choose your type of pasta for each of the pasta mains, however, offering guidance or suggestions as to the best choices would make this even better.

We tried three of the pasta options, the bolgnese, the pollo pesto and the Soprano Sausage. When the meals first arrived they looked a little sparse on ingredients in the sauce, but thankfully there were plenty hidden under the pasta and we found the sauces for both the Pollo Pesto and the Soprano Sausage tasty and filling.

The Pollo Pesto for us was the highlight, creamy, good flavour and plenty of variety. The Soprano Sausage was also a solid, filling dish and we liked the variety of flavour in this sauce. Unfortunately, the Bolognese was a little disappointing and we found this a bit bland and one dimensional.

The pizzas are served on a thicker base than your traditional Rome style pizza. Our vegetarian pizza was loaded with toppings. The pizza sauce had a nice flavour but the dough was just a little dense. A good pizza but there are better pizzas in Melbourne.

Overall, Soprano is convenient and comfortable. The menu offers a large range and while you need to be careful with what you order, on the balance of things, it was an enjoyable meal offering reasonably good value. As an added bonus they also do take away if you’re local to them.

Parking: It’s still close enough to the City that parking is a bit pricey, but there are plenty of car parks close by.

Getting here on PT: It’s not really well served by public transport directly, but is a quick 10 minute walk from Flinders Street Station
