Food and Drink Melbourne CBD and Inner Suburbs

Review: Sweetie and Moustache, CBD

This central Melbourne venue is full of variety. Downstairs (well on the third floor) at Sweetie you can enjoy their creative desserts, on the adorable rooftop, there's more funky cocktails and a savoury bar menu!

The Overview…

Food: Dessert Cocktails, Nutella Bros, Fruits Paradise, Mille Crepe Cakes, Mixed Fruits Crepes and Egg Waffles; Bar snacks, including onion rings, cheese and meat platter, squid and lobster roll.

The details…

Sweetie: Sweetie is the third floor dessert bar and has the feel of an English pub. There’s lots of dark wood and the venue is a lot smaller than you realise. It’s much more suited to couples, there are very few tables for large groups.

I was surprised how different it was to many of the other Asian style dessert bars in the area but I could definitely imagine it being cosy and comfortable in winter time. We ordered a range of desserts and cocktails.

The dessert cocktails were the highlight, and while they are a little pricey for the amount of cocktail you get, they look awesome and taste delicious so are well worth a visit to try. The desserts are super creative, particularly dishes like the nutella bros and fruits paradise, which plate beautifully as well – but they still need some work on the technique as most of the dishes lacked a little depth of flavour and were a bit one dimensional. My egg waffles were surprisingly good and they nailed the texture and flavours with these, but they lacked the level of presentation of many of the other dishes. Most dishes were generous portions, but we did find the crepe cakes were quite small serves.

Mr Moustache: Mr Moustache is the rooftop bar, and it’s a gorgeous space. Again it’s small, but it’s secluded with nice views, and a bright fresh feel – a total contrast to downstairs. Here the menu is different – no desserts only savoury items, and more cool cocktails. I definitely thought the cocktails here, while still a little pricey, were more generous and again the presentation is fab (they are worth it just to get a cocktail in a gumball machine).

The food at Mr Moustache was better. I enjoyed the onion ring dish, which is another clever little creative dish, and the meat and cheese platter. The dishes upstairs were more interesting, with more combinations of flavours, and a little more mature but unfortunately we didn’t get to sample enough items to get the full effect of the menu.

Overall Sweetie and Moustache strikes me as a work in progress. They are definitely getting there with some things – they’ve nailed the cocktails, they just need to pull together the plating, technique and flavours now a bit more consistently. The service was also a little hit and miss and while much better the second time, this again needs a bit of work to keep people coming back. Looking at the great effort that has gone into the Mr Moustache rooftop, I’m sure they’ll keep putting in the hard work to get better and better.
