Review: Little Hof, South Melbourne

Little Hof – The Overview…

Based at South Melbourne Market

South Melbourne market is home to Hofbrauhaus’s latest venture, Little Hof.

Bratwurst

Nestled in the centre of the market’s outdoor dining precinct on Cecil Street, Little Hof was doing a healthy trade when we popped by on a Sunday afternoon.  The sun was shining and the large shared dining tables under bright blue umbrellas took me back to the bustling squares of Munich in a second. I’m not sure if everyone was just delighted to be out of lockdown on such a nice day but people were smiling and jovial and the whole area had a really fun vibe.

Bretzels and Bratwurst

Bretzel and Bratwurst

The food at Little Hof contains many Hofbrauhaus favourites repackaged into a take away form. We opted to try a Bretzel and bratwurst. While we loved the atmosphere of the seating area and stayed here to eat, both dishes would easily work as a grab and go option too.

The Bretzel was so soft with the perfect amount of coarse salt sprinkled on top. This will definitely become a go-to for me when grocery shopping at the market, I loved its simplicity and portability. It’s a great add-on or starter to make your meal a bit more substantial too.

The bratwurst was soft and juicy. For anyone who’s attended European Christmas markets or Munich beer houses, it will take you straight back (without the 45 minute wait time to be served). There were more adventurous sausage options if you fancy something a little different but I was all for keeping it simple when we visited.

Apple Strudel

Apple Strudel

Rounding out the menu are soft drinks, beers and some larger pork knuckle boxes. We also finished up with the most delicious apple strudel and vanilla custard. Layered between flaky pastry was the more traditional apple and mixed dried fruit filling (think of the stuff you put in Christmas cakes mixed with the things you put in apple pie) so it had a slightly more savoury pastry than you might expect if you’re used to the Aussie variety. The vanilla custard and fresh berries added a little extra sweetness though, and while my waistline wasn’t thanking me, it was a fab way to round off the meal.

I left full, and Little Hof is a great place to enjoy a few beers and snacks with some mates on a sunny day. It also offers a carefully crafted a menu that means you can easily take away items as a snack will shopping, or combine various dishes to enjoy a hearty German feast. We’re so glad this latest opening lived up to the Hofbrauhaus standard we’ve come to expect.
