Good Times Milk Bar – The Overview…
Food: Dippy Eggs, French Toast, Chilli Scrambled
Bentleigh locals will be familiar with the instantly recognisable Good Times, the bright pink unit lighting up what was once an unremarkable set of shop-fronts. Inside, the baby pink theme continues into a spacious and trendy venue. There’s a nod to traditional milk bars with the detailing on the counter, but beyond this Good Times is about as far from old-fashioned as it gets.
We started with the dippy eggs which are presented in a super-cute pink egg box. The dish is a lot of fun. The eggs were perfectly cooked – dippy yellow and hard white. (I’m a bit of a dippy egg connoisseur ). We love the pecorino soldiers too; they are much more interesting that just normal bread and give the dish a real grown up feel and a richer flavour, and it was nice to have a variety of things to dip them in or top your eggs with.
The Chilli scrambled had lots more colour than typically seen, although it was quite small compared to many similar dishes available locally. There was a bit of heat but nothing too spicy and the dish had a slight Mexican twist with the tortilla and guacamole. It was a tasty, enjoyable dish but it definitely felt like they were trying to play a little safe and they definitely could have pushed the envelope a lot more on this dish to make it really stand out.
Finally we finished with the French toast, a quite refined and muted sweet dish. I liked that it wasn’t overly “fun” and that there had been more thought put into the flavours than it’s ability to look nice on Instagram. It’s a real pull back from previous sweet dishes on the menu, and it’s the first one I’d happily go back and order again and again. The classic banana-caramel combo worked perfectly, helped by the fact they didn’t make the toast itself too sweet. The creamy lemon curd just added a nice zing to the dish also – it’s a really yummy brunch dish.
I enjoyed Good Times, and after a couple of years in Bentleigh I do feel they’re finally starting to find their feet as a popular, local cafe instead of just a brunch destination on a Pinterest list of “places I must eat”.
