Review: Hokkaido, Box Hill

Bursting onto the food scene in 2016 with their first stores in Malaysia, Hokkaido have enjoyed huge success and gone on to launch outlets across the whole of Asia, with stores in Japan, China, Vietnam, Singapore, and many others.

Hokkaido

Hokkaido have continued their success in Australia with a growing number of stores across the country, several of which we have here in Melbourne. We visited the Box Hill Central location, and though it was just a tiny little store, it was well stocked. Located just off Carrington Road you really can’t miss it, especially with its bright yellow, eye catching branding.

Like all Hokkaido stores, it had a clean and simple design with displays to really show off their tarts. Staff were eager and pleasant and had a smile for every customer, no matter how busy it got.We struggled to choose between their traditional 3 cheese tarts that they’re famous for, and a whole range of flavours that are guaranteed to satisfy anyone’s dessert cravings.  We finally opted to try their traditional tarts along with the strawberry tarts.

While their traditional tarts will always be iconic, we loved the sweet strawberry option. The sharp crumbliness of the short crust pastry gave it a great texture. We really liked that it felt more dessert like, and it held up much better than the originals over time too. We saved one for the next day and even then the pastry had still retain it’s crispy, unlike the original cheese, which I really recommend eating as soon as you get it. We think Hokkaido have made some great business choices since coming to Australia and the expand range has plenty to draw us back in for another visit.
