The details…

Rumour Mill is a fairly large Croydon café, situated in a shopping precinct instead of Main Street, it’s popular with a wide range of locals, from older friends catching up and tradies popping in for an after work meal, to young families enjoying the spacious interior. Boasting bare brick, a concrete floor and brushed walls it has a fairly industrial feel, with smatterings of greenery adorning the walls. It suits the space, and gives it a hip, yet neutral feel.

There’s a lot on the menu and we were pleased to see much of it is gluten free or vegan! The plating may trick you into thinking that this is quite a simple café but the dishes are actually quite creative. We loved the friendly staff, who took a genuine interest in having a chat with us about our day, even those who weren’t specifically serving our table. We went towards the end of their day, and the café was still fairly busy when we arrived so to still have this attitude was fantastic.

We were quite full after a big day of brunching so we opted for the Ploughman’s Platter and Donut Waffles. The Platter is an ideal light lunch (or extra sharing plate if you’re a bit greedy) and we ordered it with the gluten free bread, which was actually really tasty (if you’ve never tried gluten free bread, trust me, this is no mean feat as it often tastes exactly like cardboard). The honey roast ham was delicious and there was a nice mix of flavours. The only thing that let the plate down a little was the chicken terrine, which felt a little bland next to the tasty ham, strong cheese and sharp pickles, but overall it was a really enjoyable and different lunch idea.

The donut waffles were super soft and super sweet. We’re glad we had them as a dessert as we felt they were just a little too sugary as a breakfast dish unless you have a really sweet tooth. The banana on the side did help to balance the sweetness out though and they went perfectly with the generous serve of ice cream. We loved that they were a little creative by offering the donut waffles instead of something more common, like pancakes, and they are a great cheat day breakfast.
