The details…

Enter neighbour is an unassuming little cafe in Camberwell that is definitely worthy of your attention. The space is clean, simple and straightforward without any of the pretensions some cafes can exhibit. Yes, there’s the exposed brick walls, but this isn’t a place that’s trying too hard to be trendy and instead is happy to be a place for people to get comfortable in and enjoy some good food.

What initially looks to be a fairy small cafe, with the main space holding a handful of tables for about 20 people, a quick wander through the doorway at the back leads you to another room with an additional 15 seats as well a small courtyard area out back, though you might want to wait for slightly warmer weather before opting for this.

When we arrived we were immediately greeted by enthusiastic and helpful staff who were happy and eager to offer up their own personal recommendations from the menu. You get the feeling they have real pride in what they do here. After much deliberation we opted for their new Spiced Cider Bircher, the Madagascan Vanilla Bean Panna Cotta, and the Scotch Pancakes.

Soft and moist with a subtle coffee flavour to the mascarpone, these pancakes were definitely a hit. The generous scattering of strawberries and caramelised banana coupled with the chocolate sauce and coffee soil ensure the flavours are rich but also balanced in a way that isn’t overwhelming. And with the light, spongey consistency of the pancakes themselves, this was a good, tasty sweet dish.

With beautiful presentation, the Panna Cotta is an eye catching choice. The dark plate really accentuates the strong, vibrant colours of the ingredients delicately arranged around the dish. Though the panna cotta itself didn’t quite nail the perfect wobble, it still tasted great, and for us it’s a mus try. The creamy vanilla is so smooth and the limoncello infused passion fruit gel gives it a nice strong citrusy kick. As a brunch dish, we found it to be just a little too sparse. It’s perfect as a dessert dish after something else!

This is not a problem the Bircher suffered from. Probably our favourite dish of the day, its consistency was spot on, and while it might be an acquired taste, the spicy cider was a subtle and welcome flavour that was complemented well by the sliced pear. A thoroughly enjoyable and filling dish, this one gets a well deserved thumbs up.
