The update…

We headed back to Syndicate Room on a Friday night to try out their newly launched dinner menu. The venue had a nice vibe with lively music and soft lighting. It was a little cool at first but soon warms up once the heater kicks in. Being new opening times for these guys, it was very quiet when we visited, but it’s only a small venue, so a couple more tables of people would have made all of the difference to give it a little more energy.

They have a great menu that offers good value – the most expensive main being only $25. While it’s not extensive, as usual these guys aren’t making life easier for themselves with the variety of cuisines on offer. It all sounded good but the gnocchi nudged it for me (slightly ahead of the Uncle BOB  – a pork belly and rice bowl), and M.B. after being a bit burgered out that day, went for the feta stuffed chicken breast.

Mains came in good time and looked great! My brisket melted in my mouth and the gnocchi was soft and pillowy. What I really loved about this dish was that, while it was packed with flavour, it was such a light dish and didn’t become too rich or overwhelming as I often find red meat dishes such as this can.

The chicken breast was juicy and well cooked. The stuffing had lots of flavour and was nicely balanced with the creamy sweet potato mash and cripsy asparagus. While the feta is a little indulgent, it overall felt like a clean, healthy meal – which is always a bonus.

For dessert we shared the apple crumble – which was more of a deconstructed variety than your traditional apple crumble. It wasn’t an overly sweet dessert, with slightly sour apples, crushed pistachios and almond crumble – prepare yourself for something a little different that your usual apple crumble dish and you’ll really enjoy this one. For us, it was a good little dessert that just needed a scoop more ice cream to really finish it off.

I love that these guys have gone into dinner with the same attitude they went into brunch with – determined to push the boat out a little and try new things and they’ve started out with some great little dishes. Ideally located minutes from Southland, it would be my choice for dinner after an afternoon of shopping!
