The details…

Zeus Street Greek is a fairly new opening at Moonee Ponds Central. With large windows and a beautiful interior of bare brick walls (and floor) and dark wood, the space feels clean and modern.

The open kitchen behind the counter looks great too. A good mix of table sizes accommodates everything from individual diners to larger groups and there are also tables outside for when the weather decides to behave itself again and give us some sunshine. Staff were welcoming and enthusiastic, helpfully talking us through the various menu options available and making sure we had everything we needed throughout the meal.

We opted for the Tzimmy Lamb Pita, Flame Grilled Chicken off the spit, and a side of Haloumi Chips. The tzimmy lamb pita was the perfect size, with just the right amount of fillings. A generous amount of meat alongside onions, tomatoes, tzatziki and paprika dusted chips, every ingredient was balanced well against all others. The pita was soft and fresh and the whole thing held together well without any of the messiness that you sometimes get with a pita.

The side of Haloumi chips was probably our favourite part of the meal. Simply presented and served with smoky yoghurt and a wedge of lemon, they were delicious. Coated with tapioca flour and lightly fried, the flavour was spot on. With a nice soft centre and smooth texture, this is a perfect side dish to any meal.

The flame grilled chicken came in a simple white pot with pita bread and tzatziki on the side, all served on a small wooden board. The chicken looked and tasted beautiful. Cooked in a lemon paste to give it an extra little kick, the meat had a wonderful flavour and falls apart in the mouth. Whist on first impression it doesn’t appear to be a whole lot of food, we were quickly disabused of this notion as soon as we started to dig in. There’s 200g of meat in that pot and, coupled with the pita bread, we weren’t left hungry afterwards.

Which is why we were defeated by the huge plate of greek doughnuts we were presented with for dessert. Drizzled with nutella and walnuts, they looked great. The nutella gave them a nice sweetness without being too overwhelming. The doughnuts themselves were a little hot at first, but once we started eating found them to be a good dessert dish. While on their own they didn’t have a lot of flavour, mixed with the nutella and walnuts, they worked well and were a good little finale to our meal!
