The details…
Despite being a NSW company, Tella Balls Dessert Bar has managed to guarantee its Melbourne success by making its newest venue incredibly difficult to find (and we all know anywhere we can’t find is surely great!
It’s tucked away on the lower ground floor of Melbourne Central which is a shame as the food court environment doesn’t do these excellent desserts justice, and the struggle to find a seat can be off-putting as they’re not the kind of desserts you can eat on the go. However, they are talking about having some extended opening hours and they certainly won’t be short of passing trade – what better way to cheer yourself up when you find out your train is delayed as it’s stuck in the city loop once again!
Once you move past the location, turn your attention to their amazing range of desserts. As the name suggests – there’s a focus on nutella in these desserts and they’ve got some fab crazy creations based on your favourite dishes: fish and chips, kebabs and lasagna – all recreated as nutella drizzled desserts.
We ordered the Reese’s Pieces Pancake, The Waffle Burger and the Tellabab. The pancakes were an enjoyable dessert – the Reese’s Pieces made it very rich and sweet though – so it’s not for the faint hearted. The Waffle Burger was HUGE, with a good serve of strawberries, banana and ice cream to break up the Nutella. The waffles themselves were nice and soft, and while we struggled to make a dent in it after our other two desserts we definitely liked this!
Finally, the Tellabab (doughnut pitta filled with milk and Belgian white chocolate shavings, banana, strawberries, fresh whipped cream and of course nutella), was a chocolate lovers dream with a soft doughnut pitta. We were a little disappointed with the presentation on this, after seeing a nearby table get one which looked amazing – ours lacked the white chocolate and had a little too much Nutella so you didn’t really get the kebab vibe. Taste wise it hit the mark though, and we were impressed with what these new kids on the block are bringing to Melbourne’s Dessert scene.

Parking: There’s plenty of paid parking around Melbourne Central, although as always, my advice is take public transport.
Getting here on PT: It is literally outside of Melbourne Central train station. If you prefer the tram, both Swanston Street and Elizabeth Street trams will stop at Melbourne Central – and then the walk depends on how quickly you can find it.
